CAIR-Texas to Join Coalition Calling for Citywide Shutdown, ‘No Business as Usual’ in Movement for Justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo
The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas), alongside local community organizations, faith leaders, labor representatives, and small business owners, will hold a press conference tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21, at 1 p.m. at Houston City Hall.
Organizers will call for citywide participation in a day of action titled “No Business as Usual” on Friday, July 24, to demand justice for ICE violence victim Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
This action follows CAIR-Texas’s initial July 9 demand for full accountability and an independent investigation after Mr. Salgado Araujo, a long-time Houston father and business owner, was killed during an ICE operation on July 7.

Speakers will address the press to outline plans for sustaining community momentum following a protest on Sunday, July 19, at Ervan Chew Park organized by over 30 labor and grassroots groups, which shut down the Dunlavy Street Bridge.
Organizers are demanding full accountability following recent ICE-related deaths, including Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
“Houston is seething with anger at the murder of our innocent community member and is ready to, in the spirit of Minneapolis, continue the fight this week and beyond. There can be no business as usual when ICE murders a member of our community,” said Griffin Walker with Stand Up! Houston.
“This coming Friday, July 24, Houston will hold a shutdown—a day of No Business As Usual—to make clear that the people won’t stop fighting until our demands are met: justice for Lorenzo, an independent investigation, immediate release of the names of the killer ICE agents and prosecution to the fullest extent, release of the witnesses of Lorenzo’s murder currently held in detention, and an immediate end to ICE and Houston Police Department collaboration.”
The coalition’s fight for these demands continues with the No Business as Usual mobilization on Friday, July 24, at 6:00 p.m. at Hidalgo Park.
