(AUSTIN, TEXAS, 06/20/2025) – The Austin chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Austin) today postponed the planned memorial event for Qusay Hussein, a distinguished Iraqi refugee, in deference to the wishes of his family to delay all commemorative events until his body returns to his birthplace in Iraq for burial, a process that has been impacted by the unforeseen outbreak of Israel-Iran war which led to suspension of flights to the Middel East.
In a statement, Shaimaa Zayan, CAIR Austin Operations Manager, said:
“The community is eagerly anticipating this event as an opportunity to honor Qusay and celebrate his enduring legacy. However, it is essential that we respect the wishes of his family. Qusay was a powerful source of inspiration to many, and I am confident that this event will empower all attendees—especially those from marginalized communities. Details regarding the new date, time, and location will be announced later”
In honor of Qusay’s life, the school of Social Work at the University of Texas in Austin established the Qusay Hussein Humanitarian Award. This award recognizes strength of character, resilience, and compassion for others. It will be given annually to a graduating student who has demonstrated these values in the school community.
